Finding Hope: Jesus Heals the Lame Man in John 5

Scripture Reading:  John 5:1–15

Observation: Jesus Sees What Others Overlook

In Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, there was a pool called Bethesda. It was surrounded by people. They were blind, lame, or paralyzed. One man had been in this condition for thirty-eight years. Jesus saw him and knew how long he had suffered. The man’s problem wasn’t just physical—it was also relational. “I have no one to help me into the pool,” he said. Every time the water stirred, someone else got in ahead of him.

Then Jesus spoke just seven powerful words:
“Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”

Right away, the man was healed.

This miracle happened on a Sabbath day. Religious leaders objected—not because of the healing—but because the man carried his mat, which they considered “work” on the Sabbath. Their rules became more important than compassion.

Later, Jesus found the man again and said, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” This hints that perhaps the man’s former condition had a spiritual root. Either way, Jesus didn’t just heal the body—He addressed the soul.

Insight & Reflection: When Waiting Feels Endless—But Jesus Steps In

Jesus didn’t just pass by Bethesda by accident—He came with purpose and compassion. He already knew the man’s suffering. Perhaps this man had been crying out in silence. He longed for change but was unable to make it happen on his own.

Just like him, many of us sit by our own “pools” for years. We wait for the right moment, for someone to help, or for something to change.

But Jesus comes directly to us.

Even when we are too broken to move, He sees us. When we are too discouraged to try again, He sees us. When we are too tired to pray one more time, He sees us. And when He speaks, healing happens.

Some of our suffering may be the result of sin, but not all. Regardless, God uses suffering as a wake-up call. In my own life, I’ve noticed that dwelling on thoughts not pleasing to God affects me. I often feel spiritually unwell. Sometimes, I even feel physically unwell. Yet when I confess and realign myself with Him, I feel healing—inside and out.

Jesus doesn’t just want us to walk again. He wants us to walk with Him, in freedom, in obedience, and in truth.

Life Application

Let’s take a moment to reflect deeply and ask:

  1. What are the “pools” in your life where you’ve been waiting too long—hoping for change but feeling stuck?
→ Invite Jesus into those areas. He is not waiting for perfect timing; He is waiting for your openness.
  2. Are you clinging to rituals, routines, or rules that lack love and compassion?
→ Examine whether your spiritual practices are helping you connect with God or just keeping you busy.
  3. Is there any sin or habit that God may be using suffering to draw your attention to?
→ Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Repentance opens the door to restoration.

Prayer: A Prayer for Healing, Wholeness, and Obedience

Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You see me—even when no one else does. Thank You that You are never too late, never unaware, and never unloving. Forgive me for the times I waited by the “pool” instead of running to You. Forgive me for allowing sin or discouragement to distance me from Your healing presence.

Lord, I believe You are still saying today, “Get up.” Help me respond in faith. Heal not just my body, but also my heart, my thoughts, and my desires. Make me whole and walk with me every step.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
