An Invitation to a Deeper Life
There are moments in our faith journey when Jesus gently but firmly confronts us with a question we would rather avoid: Are you willing to let go so that true life can begin?
In John 12:20ā36, Jesus stands on the edge of the cross. The crowd is growing, even Greeksāoutsidersāare seeking Him. Everything looks like success. Yet instead of celebrating popularity, Jesus speaks about death, surrender, and light. His words are not meant to discourage us, but to invite us into a deeper, richer, eternal life.
This devotion is not just a passage to readāit is a story to step into. And somewhere in this story, you may discover that God is lovingly asking you to trust Him with everything.
š Scripture | John 12:20ā36
As Passover approached, some Greeks came to Jerusalem to worship. They asked Philip, āSir, we want to see Jesus.ā Their request signaled something extraordinary: Jesusā mission was never limited to one peopleāit was for the whole world.
Instead of granting a private meeting, Jesus revealed the purpose of His coming:
āUnless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain.ā (John 12:24)

Jesus spoke openly about His coming death, His inner anguish, and His complete surrender to the Fatherās will. A voice from heaven affirmed Him, yet the crowd remained confused. How could the Messiah die? How could glory come through suffering?
Jesus ended with a tender warning and invitation:
āWalk in the light while you can⦠Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.ā (John 12:35ā36)
š Observation | What Is Happening in This Passage?
Several powerful truths unfold in this moment:
- The Gospel is for all people. The Greeks seeking Jesus show that salvation is not confined to heritage or background.
- Life comes through death. Jesus uses the image of a seed to explain that fruitfulness always requires surrender.
- Following Jesus is costly. Loving our lives more than Him leads to loss; surrender leads to eternal gain.
- Jesus models obedience. Though His soul is troubled, He chooses the Fatherās will over escape.
- Light demands a response. To delay trust is to risk being overtaken by darkness.
Every word Jesus speaks points us to a choice: cling to what is temporary or trust Him with what is eternal.

š” Reflection & Insights | The Heart of the Message
1. A Seed Must Die to Multiply
Jesus did not glorify suffering for its own sakeāHe revealed its purpose. His death would open the way for our new life.
When Jesus spoke of being ālifted from the earth,ā He was pointing directly to the cross. His death would not only pay the price for sināit would draw people to Himself.
āAnd when I am lifted from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.ā (John 12:32)
The cross became the great invitation of Godās love. Through Jesusā sacrifice, hearts across nations and generations would be stirred, convicted, and reconciled back to the Father. His death would awaken faith, birth the Church, and call countless people into committed discipleship.
As Paul later wrote:
āAnyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!ā (2 Corinthians 5:17)
What felt like defeat became divine victory. What looked like loss became salvation. What was buried in death rose to bring lifeārestoring sinners, reconciling humanity to God, and multiplying faith across the world.
What feels like loss in Godās hands becomes the soil of resurrection.
2. Losing Your Life Is How You Find It
The world teaches us to preserve comfort, success, and control. Jesus teaches us to release them.
āAnyone who wants to serve me must follow me⦠And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.ā (John 12:26)
True honor does not come from self-promotion, but from faithful obedience.
3. Choose the Light While You Can
Jesus is not merely pointing to lightāHe is the Light. To walk with Him is to walk in truth, clarity, and protection.
āApart from me, you can do nothing.ā (John 15:5)
Remaining in Him keeps us from wandering blindly into darkness.

⨠Testimony | When I Had to Die to My Own Plans
There was a time when I wanted Jesus to bless my plans rather than transform my heart. I believed in Him, but I was still holding tightly to comfort, control, and my own definition of success.
John 12:24 unsettled me. I wanted growth without surrenderālife without death.
Then God asked me to lay down something I deeply valued: my career and earningsāthings that defined my identity and security. It felt like losing myself. I resisted, questioned, and delayed.

But when I finally surrendered, something unexpected happened. What I feared as death became the doorway to new life. Peace replaced striving. Purpose replaced anxiety. Fruit began to growāin my faith, my relationships, and my obedience.
Choosing the light meant stepping out of half-commitment. It meant honesty, trust, and daily dependence on Jesus.
I am still learning, still surrenderingābut I know this truth with confidence: what we release in obedience, God redeems with purpose.
As Elisabeth Elliot wisely said:
āIf you donāt give up something for Christ, you havenāt given up anything.ā
