A Story of Unbelief, Relentless Grace, and the God Who Pursues Us
Have you ever stood in a brightly lit room and still felt like you were in the dark?
That was me.
On the outside, I looked accomplishedâthriving in the corporate world, achieving, excelling, climbing. On the inside, something was restless. Something was unsettled. I was surrounded by light, yet I was living as though I could not see.
This devotion is not just about the unbelief of the people in John 12. It is about my unbelief. And perhapsâif we are honestâit may be about yours too.
đ Scripture: When Miracles Were Not Enough
John 12:37â50
âBut despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.â (John 12:37)
John tells us that even after witnessing undeniable miracles, many still rejected Jesus. This fulfilled what the prophet Isaiah had spoken centuries earlier:
âLord, who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?â (Isaiah 53:1; John 12:38)
And again:
âHe has blinded their eyes and hardened their heartsâŚâ (Isaiah 6:10; John 12:40)
Then Jesus cried out:
âIf you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me⌠I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.â (John 12:44â46)

The tension in this passage is gripping:
- Light had come.
- Truth had been spoken.
- Love stood before them.
- Yet hearts remained unmoved.
Why?
đž The Mystery of Hardened Hearts
Jesus once compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a field where wheat and weeds grow together (Matthew 13:24â26). The enemy plants deception among truth. Not everyone who hears will respond.
But here is the deeper truth:
God reveals Himself to those who truly desire Him.
Unbelief is not always about a lack of evidence. Often, it is about the resistance of the heart.
As A. W. Tozer wrote:
âThe essence of idolatry is the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him.â
Sometimes we reject God not because He is absentâbut because we prefer control.
âď¸ The Conflict Within: My Own Unbelief
I grew up knowing about God. I heard stories from my grandparents and attended church classes. I feared Him. I obeyed out of obligation. I thought I loved Him.
But love without surrender is not love.
When I entered the corporate world, everything changed. Success became my compass. Excellence became my identity. Achievement became my security.
I was thriving in the marketplaceâbut drifting from God.
I showed strength. I projected control. But inside, there was a soft voice I kept ignoring.
The Holy Spirit was nudging.
I resisted.
When my cousin invited me to her Bible-believing church, I dismissed her:
- âYour group is too strict.â
- âThere are too many restrictions.â
But what I truly meant was:
âI donât want to give up control.â
The conflict intensified. I could not sleep. My mind was restless. I felt undone and didnât understand why. I even asked my cousin to find a psychotherapist for me.
Instead, she listened.
She prayed.
She waited.
And then she asked gently:
âWould you like to come to church?â
This time, I said yes.
That was the turning point.

⨠The Climax: When Light Broke Through
Walking into that church felt like coming home.
Like the prodigal daughter returning.
Like scales falling from my eyes.
I realized something powerful:
God had been pursuing me long before I acknowledged Him.
Jesus said:
âThe Father who sent me has commanded me what to say⌠and I know his commands lead to eternal life.â (John 12:49â50)
Eternal life begins not after deathâbut the moment we surrender.
As C. S. Lewis said:
âI gave in and admitted that God was God.â
That is where true peace begins.
đ The Urgency of the Hour
Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:18â20 to go and make disciples. He started with twelve. That multiplication has reached the world.
Unlike networking models that fade, the Gospel continues to expand because it is powered by the Spirit of Godânot human ambition.
And Jesus warned in Matthew 24:4â8 about wars, famines, and earthquakesâbirth pains signaling urgency.
We cannot remain complacent.
We were not saved to sitâwe were saved to shine.

đŻ Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for choosing me when I did not choose You.
Thank You for opening my blinded eyes and softening my hardened heart.
Make me an instrument of Your light in this dark world.
Let me not waste the time You have given me.
Help me finish well so that one day I may hear,
âWell done, good and faithful servant.â
In Your mighty name, Amen.
đ§ Life Application: Walking in the Light
- Examine Your Heart
- Is there an area where you are resisting Godâs voice?
- Are you holding onto control instead of surrender?
- Respond to the Nudge
- The Holy Spiritâs whispers grow quieter when ignored.
- Obedience today prevents regret tomorrow.
- Share the Light
- Pray for one person who seems spiritually âblind.â
- Be patientâsomeone once prayed for you.
- Live with Urgency
- Time is not guaranteed.
- Invest in eternal things, not temporary applause.
- Finish Well
- Faithfulness matters more than fame.
- Daily surrender builds a lifetime of obedience.

âď¸ Journaling Prompt
- Where in my life have I mistaken success for surrender?
- When did I sense God calling meâand how did I respond?
- Who might God be asking me to pursue with His love?
Write honestly. Invite God into the tension. Let Him reveal what needs to be healed.
đ A Final Reflection
The people in John 12 saw miracles and still did not believe.
I saw blessings and still resisted.
Yet God did not stop pursuing.
Perhaps you are in that restless place right now.
Maybe you cannot sleep.
Maybe success feels hollow.
Maybe someone keeps inviting you closer to God.
That is not a coincidence.
That is grace.
The Light is still shining.
The question is:
Will you step out of the darkness?
đŹ I would love to hear from you:
Have you ever experienced a season of resistance before fully surrendering to God? What finally opened your eyes?
