Before the Cross, Jesus Had You in Mind
A Devotional Reflection on John 17:1–26
📖 Scripture Reading
John 17:1–26
🌅 Introduction: The Prayer Spoken Before the Storm
Imagine standing in a quiet room late at night.
The air feels heavy. The next few hours will change everything.
Jesus knows that betrayal is coming. He knows the cross awaits Him. He knows the nails, the suffering, the rejection, and the separation He will endure for the salvation of the world.
Yet what does He do?
He prays.
Not for escape.
Not for comfort.
Not for an easier path.
Instead, He lifts His eyes to heaven and speaks to His Father.
And what makes this prayer even more astonishing is this:
He prayed for you.
Long before you were born, before your struggles, failures, victories, doubts, and prayers, Jesus saw you in His heart and prayed for you.
John 17 is often called The High Priestly Prayer because it reveals the heart of Jesus like few other passages in Scripture. It is a sacred moment where we are invited to listen to the conversation between the Son and the Father.
And as we listen, we discover something life-changing:
We are deeply loved, carefully protected, and intentionally included in God’s eternal plan.
🔍 Observation: Treasures Hidden Within Jesus’ Prayer
1. ✨ Jesus Desired the Father’s Glory Above Everything Else
Jesus prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You.” (John 17:1)
Even facing the cross, His greatest concern was the Father’s glory.
This reveals the heart of true discipleship: living not for our own recognition, but for God’s glory.
2. 👑 Eternal Life Is Found in Knowing God
Jesus declared:
“Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
Eternal life is not merely about living forever.
It is about having a personal relationship with God.
Many people know facts about God, but Jesus invites us to truly know Him.
3. 🎯 Jesus Finished the Work Given to Him
Jesus reported to the Father:
“I have brought You glory on earth by finishing the work You gave Me to do.” (John 17:4)
What a powerful statement.
Jesus completed His assignment perfectly.
He lived every day with purpose and obedience.
4. 🛡️ Jesus Prayed for the Protection of His Followers
Knowing He would soon return to the Father, Jesus prayed for His disciples.
He knew the challenges they would face.
He knew persecution would come.
He knew the world would oppose them.
Yet He asked the Father to keep and protect them.
What comfort this brings.
The same Savior who prayed for Peter, John, and the other disciples also prays for us today.
5. 🔥 Jesus Prayed for Our Holiness
Jesus said:
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)
God’s Word transforms us.
The more we spend time in Scripture, the more our hearts become aligned with God’s will.
Holiness is not achieved through human effort alone; it is produced through God’s truth working within us.
6. 🤝 Jesus Prayed for Unity
One of the most repeated themes in this chapter is unity.
Jesus prayed that believers would be one just as He and the Father are one.
This unity is not based on personality, preferences, culture, or background.
It is rooted in Christ.
When believers walk in love, forgiveness, and humility, the world sees a reflection of God’s character.

7. ❤️ Jesus Prayed for Future Believers
Perhaps the most astonishing part of this prayer is found in verses 20–21.
Jesus said:
“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in Me through their message.”
That includes us.
Before Calvary, before the resurrection, before the Church existed, Jesus already had us in mind.
You were not an afterthought.
You were in His prayer.
🌊 The Heart Behind the Prayer
As I reflected on this chapter, one question kept returning to my mind:
Why would Jesus spend His final moments praying for others instead of Himself?
If I knew suffering was only hours away, I might focus on my own fears and needs.
Yet Jesus focused on glorifying the Father and caring for His followers.
This reveals the depth of His love.
Even in His darkest hour, His heart was turned toward His people.
What kind of Savior does that?
Only Jesus.
💭 Personal Testimony: When I Needed Someone Praying for Me
There have been seasons in my life when I felt overwhelmed by uncertainty.
I prayed but felt weak.
I trusted God, yet questions lingered in my mind.
I wondered whether I would have enough strength for what lay ahead.
During those moments, reading John 17 changed my perspective.
I realized something powerful:
I was never fighting alone.
Jesus knew there would be days when I would feel discouraged.
He knew there would be moments when I would struggle with fear, doubt, temptation, and weakness.
And long before those moments arrived, He had already prayed for me.
That truth brought tremendous comfort.
The circumstances around me did not immediately change, but my confidence did.
Instead of focusing on my limitations, I began focusing on Christ’s faithfulness.
If Jesus trusted the Father completely, then I could trust Him too.
If Jesus prayed for my protection, then I could rest in His care.
If Jesus desired my sanctification, then He would continue His work in me.
And if Jesus prayed that I would remain in Him, then I know He has never stopped watching over me.

⛰️ The Climax: A Prayer That Reached Across Time
As Jesus prayed that night, His words crossed centuries.
They reached beyond the disciples.
Beyond the early church.
Beyond generations.
Beyond nations.
His prayer reached all the way to us.
Imagine hearing your name whispered in the heart of the Savior before He went to the cross.
That is the beauty of John 17.
The prayer was spoken in history, but its impact continues today.
Jesus was preparing to sacrifice Himself so that we could be united with God forever.
The cross was coming.
But before the cross came the prayer.
And before the sacrifice came His love.

6. Remember That You Are Deeply Loved

Holy Father,
Thank You for allowing me to listen to the prayer of Your Son and discover how deeply I am loved.
Thank You that before I ever knew You, Jesus already had me in His heart.
Lord, help me live for Your glory above my own ambitions. Teach me to know You more deeply, trust You more completely, and obey You more faithfully.
Protect me from the schemes of the enemy and keep my heart fixed on Christ. Sanctify me through Your truth and transform me through Your Word.
When fear tries to overwhelm me, remind me that Jesus is praying for me. When discouragement comes, help me remember that I belong to You.
Make me a person who reflects Your love, pursues unity, and walks faithfully in Your will.
Thank You for the cross, for salvation, and for the privilege of being called Your child.
In the precious name of Jesus,
Amen.
